Our baby boy is one. We finally got to celebrate this boy today with cookies, cotton candy, Lion cake (when we were younger, my mom always made these amazing birthday cakes, so I am trying to continue that tradition), and our wonderful families. It was so fun to plan a party for my baby boy. If you can't tell, I think he really loved his cake (and party).

I remember how just a year ago, I too was being showered with so many baby gifts- and feeling so loved by family and friends. Do you know that feeling when you're reading a book that you cannot wait to sit down with at the end of the day? That's how I'm feeling about Dodie Smith's book "I Capture The Castle." I absolutely adore the way the narrator, a young 17-year old Cassandra, voices the story. Her witty sense of humor has me laughing out loud at times.

Anyone else read it?

(And, I know there's a film adaptation of the book, which I will gladly be watching once I am done with the book.)

This is the quilt my mom handmade for my baby boy. I selected the design and fabric, and she made it- isn't it beautiful?

She had to hand-stitch each and every triangle that make up the circles. His quilt is something that me and Gus will cherish forever.

I usually do a write-up of my favorite music from the year, which I LOVE to do because it's a good way to assess the artists I really fell in love with. But, as you can tell, I was totally preoccupied this year with my sweet baby boy. So, now, I am relying on others to tell me who to tune in.

I'm going to do this session because although I had all these ideas that I could get back to my pre-baby weight by myself, it just hasn't happened. I'm either too tired or don't push myself hard enough when it comes to my workouts, so I need help... and, that's okay, right? Right. (I'll answer my own question!)

Our Baby Boy!

Look who I get to spend all the day (and night) with. We have the sweetest baby boy who we love and adore! Baby was born on Tuesday, March 23rd at 5:48pm. He was 7 lbs and 3 ounces and 18" long and is growing every day.

My labor started with some good contractions around 2:30am and then we finally made it into the hospital around 10:30am, and baby came approximately 7 hours later. The labor actually went by pretty fast for me (even if my epidural stopped working when I was at an 8- ouch). And, within hours we were holding our precious baby... a memory that I will never forget! We are so in love with our baby.

(I'm going to keep his name on the down-low- just because we're paranoid like that. BUT, I'll be starting a private blog, so friends and family, watch out for an invite soon!)

Week 39

Self portrait at 39 weeks

I cannot believe I am at my last week of pregnancy... well, I could go over my due date, but we're already at 39 weeks! Wow.

More observations from my pregnancy, since it's pretty much all I can think about:

+ I have an insatiable hunger. Truly- I am constantly eating. (Which is strange because "they" say that you usually tend to slow down at this point because there's not much room left in the belly.)

+ I love cookies, treats, candies.... sweets. But, today- I didn't let myself get too carried away. (Go me!)

+ While reading in bed the other night, baby boy was making the most amazing moves. Jeff and I were staring at my belly laughing in awe.

+ I can no longer bend down. Really- if I drop something, I just shrug and think "ah well."

+ Jeff and I cannot stop talking about baby. We think about him all the time and can only anticipate what our lives will be like... but, we are so excited.

+ Baby's room is just about done. I love to go in his room to organize all of his cute things.

+ The whole nesting phenomenon? It's true! I've been going non-stop for the past week trying to get my home in order (and clean) before baby arrives.

+ After dealing with some crazy issues over the past couple of weeks, that no one should ever have to deal with, Jeff and I already feel an overwhelming sense of protection for our little boy.

+ I've been listening to this album a lot. I know baby already likes it.

+ Co-workers stop by my office door and constantly say "You're still here?!" (It's getting old.)

+ My stomach is ginormous. It's pretty amazing, actually.

+ I am enjoying my sleep while I can. (Even if I'm constantly waking up in the middle of the night.) In fact, it's time for me to turn in.

I cannot believe that we are just days away from meeting our baby boy! Wish us luck!

More About Baby

Remember this shot? I wanted to keep up the tradition, so on Valentine's Day, I made Jeff do a photo-shoot with me. It wasn't the ideal situation because we had to use the self-timer, so a lot of shots I wanted to do, just wouldn't work.

However, I LOVE the results of our little photo-shoot. Don't we look so happy with my belly? It makes me laugh, but it's because our little boy is in there, and we love him so much already.

As for me, when this shot was taken I was at 35 weeks, and am now at 36. (Less than one month to go!) Here are some observations of this pregnancy as of late:

+ I crave sweets all.the.time. I'm not joking. It HAS become a joke though.

+ I wake up a lot during the night with the need to shift pillows, and how I'm lying.

+ Baby moves all the time, and I love feeling his different movements. It always makes me smile.

+ Bending over is pretty difficult. I feel like an old woman most of the time.

+ Heartburn? It still hasn't left me alone. But, thank you to a tip in my comment section (Thank you Marta!) Tums Smoothies are thee best remedy.

+ Baby's room is almost complete! I just need to order this mobile, and we're set. (Okay- and, I still need to organize the room, Jeff needs to paint a couple things, but after a trip to Ikea over the weekend, we're good with the furniture.)

+ We're getting so excited to see our little guy. Just the other day Jeff and I were wondering what his laugh would sound like. I cannot wait to find out.

+ My little sister welcomed her baby boy just 11 days ago. I'm sort of obsessed with her little boy because I cannot believe how perfect he is. And, it's so amazing to see her transition into a mother overnight.

+ Can you tell we're excited? We truly are.

Feather His Nest Shower

So... the spoiling has officially begun. So far we've had two baby showers for our little boy and both have been amazing. Our friends and families have been so incredibly generous. Baby boy is lucky to have them in his life already.

This first shower was hosted by my incredibly talented sister-in-law Courtney. She threw it for me and my little sister who's baby should be coming any day now! (Please come soon!)

As you can see, she's got such an eye for detail (not to mention how beautiful her home is). The theme was "Feather His Nest." I wanted to show off some of the cute details:

Week 32

Self Portrait- 32 weeks

Here I am at 32 weeks already. I can't believe I'm 8 months along! More observations from my pregnancy:

+ A kicking baby is a comforting thing. (It hasn't gotten too uncomfortable yet for me.)

+ Baby is a night-owl just like his daddy. He goes crazy around 11:oopm-11:30pm'ish.

+ I think my face is the thing that is starting to expand (besides my belly) more than anything else. My lips are bigger- is that weird?

+ I really should be sponsored by Tums. I live off those things.

+ Food now scares me because I really, really, really, really hate heartburn.

+ Jeff has written a song for baby on the guitar. Last night he played it for baby, and baby was kicking all along- he loved it!

+ My goal is to write a song for baby on the piano before he gets here.

+ Putting socks on is starting to become a difficult task.

+ I had my very first baby shower yesterday; friends and family are so amazingly kind and generous when it comes to spoiling baby!

+ My third trimester has also brought a new wave of exhaustion. I have no energy most of the day.

+ I'm continually thinking of baby strollers, baby accessories, baby essentials- how much stuff do I really need?!

+ I already have a photo project planned for baby. I just hope I can pull it off.

+ I have just two months to go before we get to meet our baby boy; we cannot wait to hold this little one.

How to Photograph Your Hobbies

Here's the clip from last Friday's segment on "How to Photograph Your Hobbies." If you watch, you'll notice there were some technical problems in pulling up the correct photos to talk about the first example "Photography" and taking self-portraits. I was sort of rolling with it... but, at least I got through it!

However, I do need to clarify one thing. Since so many pictures were coming up at such a rapid pace, I mentioned that the yellow flowers in the first gardening example were from my garden. They're not. They're from a local grocery store. (I wish they grew in my garden!) So... there's that.

Because I was a little nervous to tape this segment, being almost 8 months pregnant and all, Jeff reminded me that I wouldn't be alone in the taping. Little baby boy is there too. All 3.5 pounds of him. (Which, is clearly evident!) BUT, that definitely reassured me.

Thanks again Studio 5 for having me on. I always have an enjoyable time. (Even at (almost) 8 months pregnant!)

+ As shown in the photo above, we're starting to accumulate a small collection of tangible items to remind us that we're having a baby! (Isn't that hat adorable? His dad has one just like it.)

+ I also am constantly thinking about baby furniture. Should I really spend $90 on Shipping for a crib?!

+ I feel like the little guy knows when I want to feel him move- when I think of it- he moves. For me.

+ It's thee worst being sick while pregnant.

+ I don't think I should take anything to treat this ridiculous head cold of mine. Is anything safe?

+ Maternity pants are strange.

+ We feel pretty confident of what the name of our little guy will be. But... it's still hard to commit to- this is a huge decision.

+ I have to weigh myself at this week's appointment. I have a feeling it's going to be the most weight gain to date.

+ While staying home from work trying to nurse this head cold, I started watching TLC's "Baby Story." Probably not the best idea- I'm now admittedly scared of labor.

+ Black is the best color to wear when trying to not look so huge.

+ When people ask how far along I am, I can now say "I am six months." I don't think people realize I still have about four months to go when they reply- "Wow- that went by fast!"

+ I'm always daydreaming of what our life will be like when the baby is here.

Growing and Growing

So- I've decided to track my growing belly. Not sure why- it is fantastically strange to wake up and see that I have grown some inches while I was sleeping- but, I do think it is amazing to see how fast my body changes to make way for the little guy.

Watch out- here comes my baby (and my belly)!

Note: This is week 20 and 22, so as you can imagine week 21 was pretty intense too. (I didn't document my growing bump while I was in NY.)

More observations while being pregnant:

+ I still worry… a lot.

+ I eat… a lot.

+ At my last doctor’s appointment, she said that I’m “growing like a weed.” Isn’t that a bad thing? Why call me a weed? There’s gotta be something more poetic.

+ I still try and sneak in a nap whenever I can.

+ I now feel awkward being around people who do not know I’m pregnant. I’m assuming they think I’m gaining lots of weight.

+ I still like to round up a week whenever I tell people how far along I am. However, I’ve learned to tell them in months rather than weeks.

+ I’m still very emotional. I well up every single day.

+ I bought clothes for our little boy while on a trip to NY and couldn’t believe how real it felt.

+ I still talk a lot about my body’s changes. I think I ask Jeff (three times a day) if my belly has grown. It usually has.

+ On said trip to NY, my body became almost useless. I couldn’t walk without something being in pain.

+ I think I’m a pregnant wimp.

+ My feet have started to swell (well- not on the everyday- but, when I was walking everywhere in NY they were)- so, I did the unthinkable: I bought Crocs.

(My crocs and I are on the right; my hot cousin in hot boots is on the left.)

+ But, they’re not bad right?

+ I’m starting to do research on all-things baby. Friends and sisters are a tremendous resource.

+ I have three pregnancy-related books on my night-stand that I peruse every single night.

+ I get heartburn just by looking at food.

+ Jeff and I already have many nicknames for the baby boy.

+ Baby's ultrasound picture is my new bookmark.

+ This baby boy is already so, so loved...

Our fun news is that we're expecting a baby boy in March! We found out our happy news last Friday, and although I was expecting the news to be a girl (I was pretty sure of it, in fact.), we could not be happier to welcome a little boy into our home. A little Jeff is going to be thee cutest.

+ I worry… a lot

+ I love to eat Golden Grahams

+ I hate the smell of my work’s bathroom hand-soap

+I am no longer tempted with Jr. Mints (Anything mint has been difficult to eat.)

+ I always feel awkward telling someone the news that “We’re pregnant!”

+ I am always tired and always hoping for a nap

+ Whenever I tell someone how far along I am, I feel the need to round-up a week

+ I like to layer my clothing to try and hide the sorta pregnant belly starting to form (When really, I just look bloated.)

+ I cry at the drop of a hat- whether it be an episode from Oprah, Extreme Home Makeover, or Biggest Loser... man. I'm emotional.

+ I like to observe babies who will be my baby’s same age at this time in a year; I’m kind of obsessed about it, because I can’t believe that we will get one of those someday too!

+ We have a garden FULL of tomatoes, and I couldn’t go near them for 3 whole months- anything tomato made me want to gag

+ Jeff refers to my throwing-up as yakking because of HOW dramatic I am when I… yak.

+ I love www.babycenter.com’s updates; I always peruse week’s ahead to see what my baby will be doing soon

+ I talk way too much about my body's changes. I’m sure Jeff and my family are sick of hearing about it.

+ My little sister, Brecke, is also pregnant. She’s such a trooper about it; I want to be more like her.

+ I cannot wait to find out if we’re having a boy or girl. I think it’s a girl; Jeff thinks it’s a boy. But, really, I don’t care which, I just want a healthy baby.

+ Jeff has been the most amazing, supportive, sweet, loving husband ever while his wife has been somebody so unlike herself.

+ And finally, I still cannot believe we’re having a baby! We're so blessed.

Chocolate Pudding Cookies

Ingredients
1 1/2 C. Butter Shortening (It's the Crisco Butter kind.)
2 C. Brown Sugar
2 Eggs
1 T. Vanilla
1 Large Chocolate Instant Pudding
4 T. Milk
3 1/2 C. Flour
1 1/2 t. Baking Soda
1 1/2 t. Salt
2-2 1/2 Chocolate Chips
(Use whatever you have in your cupboard: Milk Chocolate+ Mint (as I used tonight), Butterscotch, White Chocolate, Caramel, etc.)

Directions
Mix shortening and brown sugar. Add eggs. Mix. Add vanilla and milk, combine. Add all try ingredients- including, Pudding, Flour, Baking Soda and Salt. Combine. Add chocolate chips. Bake at 375 for 8-9 minutes.

Yields
A lot

It was my first time baking these cookies tonight. My sister made these at my Recipe Exchange on Tuesday, and knew I'd be baking them. This recipe is perfect if you have a lot of left-over chocolate chips- including different combinations. Throw them into this recipe! Tonight was mint+milk chocolate, and it was a delish combo!

We're starting to hang pictures for our "picture wall." This is what we've got so far. We've already sketched the preferred lay-out, but have quickly come to find- this is a time consuming project. If you have any tips, please share!

The two silhouettes of us on the wall are hand-cut; this was our souvenir while in Disneyland. I remember my cousins had their family's silhouettes done in Disneyland that were displayed on their wall and every time I saw them, I wanted one.

So here are ours. (I do think she got my nose spot-on. Jeff looks like a little boy in his, but I suppose we all act somewhat "little" while at Disneyland!)

Michael Jackson...

Thanks to my sister, this morning we worked-out to the pop sounds of Mr. Michael Jackson himself. It was a glorious soundtrack for the (very hard) cardio that I was pushing myself through in the wee hours of the morning. And, Mr. Jackson definitely helped.

Jeff and I just got back from a fun trip to California. On this particular day, we rented a car (The rental car place only had an 8-passenger car, or a convertible; we opted for the convertible.) and headed up the coast. It was a very fun day.

I totally fell in love with Henry + Claire. I even re-read this book for the second time earlier this year. (For the record, I loved it most the first read.) And now... the movie.

As I mentioned on Aimee's blog, I'm worried. I have to go into seeing the movie remembering that it's not the book. It can't be. They're two different worlds.

Still... I can't help but watch.

Camera Obscura, Part 2

Friends, do yourself a favor and download or purchase Camera Obscura’s recent release “My Maudlin Career.” I had only previewed and streamed this album a couple of times, but when we saw them on Tuesday night, I was immediately hooked to their new songs. And, do note: a lot of the songs are pretty mellow and are pretty much about falling in/out of love. (Jeff wishes they’d write about other topics.) However, as a hopeless romantic myself, I melt with these songs.

Some favorite tracks:

+ Swans (What is the guitar rif at the beginning?! Reminds me of a children’s song, but I cannot place it.)

Even though the show got off to a very late start, Camera Obscura, and especially Tracyanne Campbell, sounded flawless. They even had a full band- with horns, strings, keyboards- alike. A lovely show with this Scottish band. (Even if I didn’t get to bed until 2:00 am, it was well worth it.)

I have to say- it is so surreal seeing myself on television. Little mannerisms of mine, the way I use my hands, those freckles- these are all the little things I wasn't too aware of until watching myself! Very interesting, indeed, but also very fun.
